AKRON, Ohio, November 3, 1999--The
Howard University School of Law Huver I. Brown Trial Advocacy
Moot Court Team, coached by adjunct law Professor Cynthia
Goode Works, became the first HBCU law school team to win the
National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) Tournament of
Champions invitational. Photo
NITA, a premier provider of skills
training seminars and litigation-related publications, is
widely regarded as the best trial lawyer-training program in
the country. The firm’s 10-year-old mock trial event is one
of the nation’s most elite student competitions.
Four law students in the 16-member team,
Demitrius Anthony, Brandi Harden, LaShann DeArcy and Melvin
Otey, participated in the event, which was Howard’s first
NITA invitational appearance.
Otey, a third-year law student, was also
named the tournament’s “Best Advocate.”
Founded in 1995 by criminal defense
attorney and former associate law Professor Sharon Styles
Anderson, the team has compiled a record of success at two
non-invitation tournaments earned them a spot in the NITA
event.
In addition, the team has reached the
finals or semifinal rounds of several regional competitions.
As NITA Tournament of Champion winners,
the Howard team will host next year’s invitational.
