Howard Welcomes Accreditation Team

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools / Commission on Higher Education Reaccreditation Team came to Howard University on March 14-17 to meet with officers, deans and directors, and to gather information about the quality and character of the University.

The 11-member team, chaired by Wayne State University President Emeritus David W. Adamany, Ph.D., gave its preliminary findings to University executives on March 17. When Dr. Adamany completes the team's report, the University will have an opportunity to correct any errors of fact before it is forwarded to the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Middle States Commissioners, in turn, will determine the University's accreditation status, possibly during its upcoming summer meeting.

This year, the team saw a University that has visibly changed since its last accreditation in 1989. Not only has Howard invested in significant facility enhancement and construction, it has given more policy-development power to its Board of Trustees and has consolidated some of its schools and colleges to strengthen academic programs.

In preparation for accreditation, Howard University established a 60-member Self-Study Task Force in 1997. Headed by Dr. Lorraine N. Fleming, the Task Force assessed the University's ability to meet the Commission's standards for accreditation on a comprehensive list of items that includes a university's student services, its financial resources, the intellectual and professional development of its faculty, and the appropriateness of its stated mission.
