The series, Alpha Phi Alpha, documents Callis' role as a founding
member of the national fraternity. Histories, constitution and
by-laws, chapter manuals, memos, committees, speeches by Callis,
convention material, and newsletters comprise the series. Photographs
of numerous Alpha Phi Alpha convention attendants are found in the
photographs and oversize series. Most of these are rolled photographs.
The Callis papers were donated to the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center
by Dr. and Mrs Callis in 1974.

Her research and writings examine issues such as women, work,
and industry. Her work with the Y.W.C.A. is documented through

Also of note in Organizational Affiliations is the transcript
of her 1948 trial before the Federal Security Agency Loyalty Board.
The bulk of the Myra Callis Papers is comprised of her correspondence
with her husband, Dr. Henry Arthur Callis, as well as with various
other family members. This unique collection of letters spans over
seven decades and provides a wealth of information on the relationships
and accomplishments of a notable family of educators and professionals.
Family documented include Ms. Callis' father, James M. Colson II, was
Principal at Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. Her mother,
brothers, and sister were also educators. The activities of early
Colson family members is documented in this series as well. Of note
is a brief history of the family, 1830s correspondence, and an 1833-1835
record book from Monrovia, West Africa.
The papers were donated by Ms. Callis in 1974 along with the papers of her
husband, Dr. Henry A. Callis. Her brother, James Colson, donated additions
to the collection in 1979.

Notes: School educator and administrator. Mrs. Cook was an alumna
of Howard University who worked as a teacher, vice-principal,
and principal at various schools in Baltimore, Maryland.
The schools where Mrs. Cook served include Douglass High
School, Booker T. Washington High School, Dunbar Junior-Senior
High School, Harvey Johnson Junior High School, and Morgan
State College.
Mrs. Cook was also very active in professional organizations.
Some of these organizations include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
National Association of College Women, the Cooperative Women's Civic
League, the YWCA, and the Baltimore Commission on the Problems of
the Aging.
These papers extensively document the Johnson and Cook families, as well
as the life and career of Vivian Johnson Cook. The Johnson family includes
Mrs. Cook's sisters, Mary Edna Johnson Lane, who was married to J.F. Lane,
president of Lane College in Memphis, Tennessee; and Evelyn Johnson, who
was also a teacher in Tennessee and in Baltimore. The papers also document
the family of Mrs. Cook's husband, Ralph Victor Cook. He was also an educator,
who taught at Douglass High School in Baltimore for 45 years. He was the son
of John F. Cook, II of the Cook Family of Washington, D.C. [see Cook Family
papers]. Family papers also contain information on Rev. William J. Faulkner,
a folklorist from Florida who was a brother-in-law of Ralph Victor Cook.
MSRC also has the papers of Rev. William J. Faulkner.
The papers were donated to Moorland-Spingarn by Mrs. Cook's nephew,
Sterling Stuckey, in 1996.

careers as scholar of the French language and Francophone
literature and as diplomat to Niger, Senegal, Gambia and
to the United Nations. Papers concerning Will Marion include
correspondence, business papers, writings, and sheet music.
Among the papers of Mitchell's are correspondence, programs,
and a recording of Mitchell singing.
